Declare trim and per-edge additions
Synthetic print brief requires final trim 100 × 150 mm and two millimetres of extra artwork on every edge. Its required supplied artwork is 104 × 154 mm. These dimensions are the fictional job’s requirements, not a print standard. The example does not assess resolution, colour or a specific file format.
| Constraint | Required record | Example decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Trim | Width100 / height150 mm | Final finished dimensions |
| Per-edge addition | 2 mm left/right/top/bottom | Add 4 to both dimensions |
| Artwork extent | 104 × 154 mm | 102-wide file is insufficient |
Test geometry with an explicit dimension sketch
Artwork extent: 104 x 154 mm
+-------------------------+
| 2 mm on every edge |
| Trim area: 100 x 150 mm |
+-------------------------+
104 = 2 + 100 + 2
154 = 2 + 150 + 2| Case | Input | Expected decision |
|---|---|---|
| 104 × 154 | 2 mm per edge around 100 × 150 | Meets dimension test |
| 102 × 154 | Width adds only 2 total | Fails required width |
- Read trim size
- Read per-edge requirement
- Add both opposite edges
- Compare supplied dimensions
Unknown units or asymmetric edge requirements need clarification before using the equal-edge formula.
The brief changes to three millimetres on every edge. What artwork size is required?
Show the worked answer
106 × 156 mm: add 3 + 3 to the width and to the height.
Keep the trim and edge inputs in the downloadable brief so a single artwork-size field does not hide how the result was obtained.
