Schedule a task that may start after an agreed partial lead-in

Use an explicit start lag instead of assuming the predecessor must finish or that both tasks can start together.

Record the permitted overlap

Synthetic work: sorting starts at 09:00 for four hours. The supplied process allows scanning to begin two hours after sorting starts, using already sorted trays. Scanning takes three hours with a different operator. This two-hour lag is a local process input, not a general rule about scanning work.

Check the lead-in before starting the follower

  1. Confirm predecessor start
  2. Add the approved two-hour lag
  3. Identify ready trays
  4. Start scanning with separate operator

If no sorted tray is ready at 11:00, keep scanning pending and revise the plan from observed readiness.

Scanning finishes at 14:00 under the supplied overlap. A finish-to-start assumption would defer scanning to 13:00 and finish at 16:00, while starting at 09:00 would ignore the agreed lead-in.

Sorting starts at 10:00 instead. What are the revised scanning start and finish?

Show the worked answer

Start at 12:00 and finish at 15:00, provided sorted trays are actually ready and the second operator is available.
