Work with the example

Which task count belongs to Field in May? The table has team labels in A5:A6, month labels in B4:D4 and six supplied counts. G5/G6 are plain editable labels, not a dropdown or a database filter.

Edit the working cells

H5=MATCH(G5;A5:A6;0) and H6=MATCH(G6;B4:D4;0) both give 2. I5=INDEX(B5:D6;H5;H6) returns 3. Change G6 to Jun: H6 becomes 3 and I5 becomes 6. A fresh D6=0 returns numeric 0; Jul is absent and returns #N/A.

Check the failure case

I8 fixes column 2. After choosing Jun it still returns May’s3, even though the formula looks like a valid INDEX. Both row and column positions must come from the requested labels.

After setting Jun/Field to 0, should the result fall back to May 3?

Show the worked answer

No. Zero is the supplied intersection value, not a missing match.
