Compare the rule with concrete cases
Fictional layout rule V1 maps category A to wide and B to narrow. Record K is initially A. Correcting its fact to B gives narrow under the same V1. A later approved V2 maps B to wide. That changes interpretation of the unchanged B fact; it does not restore category A.
| Stage | Stored category | Rule version | Layout result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original | A | V1 | Wide |
| Fact correction | B | V1 | Narrow |
| Rule change | B | V2 | Wide |
Work through the distinction
The same output can arise through different inputs and rules. Outcome wide is not evidence that the stored category is A. Preserve both axes rather than inferring one from the result.
Under V2, must K’s B be changed to A to obtain wide?
Show the worked answer
No. V2 already maps B to wide. K remains B and the effective rule is V2.
Acceptance wording to adapt
Store the category fact and applied rule version separately. A rule-version change must not rewrite the category. A fact correction must record the changed category and preserve the selected rule unless separately changed.
