Choose against the task constraints
A hypothetical order page displays an immutable order ID and lets authorized staff change a delivery note. During a pending save, note editing is temporarily paused. Permanently read-only data and a temporary action state should not be styled as if they mean the same thing.
| Condition | Labelled record text | Disabled input |
|---|---|---|
| Immutable identifier | Display, copy and associate with its label | May imply editing would otherwise be possible |
| Temporary save lock | Text alone does not communicate the editor state | A temporarily disabled editor can reflect the lock |
| Task needs copying a reference | Keep the actual reference selectable | Do not rely on a disabled control for every reading need |
Render the immutable ID as labelled readable text. Use a temporary disabled state only for the editor that is genuinely pending, with concise task-relevant status and a defined recovery path. Avoid dimming important identity text until it is difficult to read.
Two kinds of non-editability
| Field | Rule | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Order ID O-51 | Immutable in this record model | Permanent |
| Delivery note | Editable by assigned staff | Ordinary ready state |
| Delivery note while save pending | Editing paused until outcome | Temporary |
Does a successful note save make O-51 editable?
Show the worked answer
No. Only the temporary note lock clears. The order ID remains immutable under the stated record rule.
Check the chosen interaction
- Important read-only text remains legible and selectable.
- Only controls affected by a pending operation are paused.
- Failure clears or explains the temporary lock without losing the draft.
